WS Packaging Group to Expand Plant in Franklin, Penn.
GREEN BAY, Wis., February 17, 2009—WS Packaging Group, Inc. has announced it is expanding operations at its Franklin, Pennsylvania facility (formerly known as SenecaSalem). The expansion includes moving production from WS Packaging’s Salem, Ohio, facility to a new 25,000-sq.-ft. expansion at the Franklin facility.
The expanded operations will initially create 30 to 35 new jobs, which are projected to increase to over 50 within the next three to five years based on expected growth. Construction of the new facility at Franklin is expected to begin in approximately three to four weeks and be at full capacity by the end of August 2009.
The Franklin facility is an offset and flexographic printer of shrink sleeve, in-mold, roll-to-roll and cut and stack labels. It is also one of the largest printing and converting operations of plastic and film substrates, as well as metallized and holographic papers. Its product line is among the most diverse and technically advanced in the converting industry. It also has established long-term relationships with large well-known consumer brands. Some of the relationships date back more than 30 years.
“The division formerly known as SenecaSalem has a rich heritage of being a leading provider of complex label solutions for branded consumer and business to business products companies throughout North America,” said Terry Fulwiler, CEO of WS Packaging. “The expansion in Franklin is a significant step in an ongoing effort to meet the changing needs of WS Packaging’s growing customer base.”
The new production plant in Franklin has a total capital investment estimated at $2.4 million for facilities and equipment. The investment includes $1.2 million in state assistance from the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development.
“We’re very grateful for the support from the State of Pennsylvania,” Fulwiler said. “Relocating our Salem production to the expanded facilities in Franklin is going to allow us to more competitively support our current customers, and remain well positioned for long-term growth. This is a vital step in our efforts to continue investing in our business for the future.”
The company anticipates the growth to continue in the sectors served by the Salem and Franklin facilities. But in order to capitalize on the opportunities, now and long-term, it is expanding where it has the room to do so.
“Unfortunately we ran out of room at the Salem site,” said Scott Fisher, chief operating officer for WS Packaging. “Salem had only 20,000 sq. ft. of production space and we literally used every inch of it. Because of that, we’ve not been able to fully optimize our operation there. Moving the Salem equipment to the larger facility at Franklin will enable us to add equipment that will upgrade production. One significant example of this is a considerable investment that has been made to address opportunities in the injected in-mold market. With this recent investment we will be able to bring a single source solution to customers for in-mold containers, both large and small.”
Currently in Franklin, there is 54,000 sq. ft., of manufacturing space and 112 employees. In addition to the new 25,000-sq.-ft. production facility to be built, the site has room for an additional 50,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space. Equipment from Salem will be moved in stages to ensure production deadlines remain intact.
WS Packaging Group, Inc. has more than 40 years of experience and is one of the largest printing and label converting operations in North America. It operates 17 manufacturing facilities and produces high-quality packaging products for customers ranging in size from small businesses to large, high-volume manufacturers and consumer product goods companies doing business locally, nationally, and in marketplaces worldwide.
